Gay dating is best in these 10 US cities

Are you surprised by the results? | Photo: Unsplash/Tallie Robinson According to a new report, cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York didn’t crack the top ten of the best cities in the United States for gay dating .

Published by Dr. Evan Goldstein , the founder and CEO of Bespoke Surgical , the report ranks 50 cities for dating within the LGBTI community.

‘Living in a place with a vibrant dating scene is important for most single individuals, young and old,’ said Goldstein.

‘With such an environment, it can be easier to find a potential significant other, or simply explore the area with someone who doesn’t fall in the “friend” category. Romantic relationships aren’t everything — but they’re certainly an important part of life.’

In order to rank the cities, Bespoke Surgical analyzed the 50 largest metropolitan cities in the country.

They then looked at the cities through seven categories: percentage of married people, percentages of men who have had sex with men and women who have had sex with women, LGBTI population, HRC Municipal Equality Index score, average cost for an alcoholic drink, and number of bars per 100,000 people.

One of the top 50 cities — Louisville, Kentucky — was excluded due to a lack of data. So which cities came out on top for gay dating?

Each city was able to achieve a total score of 50 based on the categories. No city achieved a perfect score, or even a score above 40.

The top ten cities with the best LGBTI dating scenes are: New Orleans, LA; Austin, TX; Tampa, FL; Orlando, FL; Providence, RI; Denver, CO; Portland, OR; Cleveland, OH; Detroit, MI; and Atlanata, GA.

Cities people typically associate with LGBTI communities and liberal attitudes landed in mixed spots.

Los Angeles came in at 12, San Francisco at 15, and New York City at 35 (primarily due to the high cost of drinks and small score for bars per 100,000 people).

The bottom five of the ranked cities are: Memphis, TN; Nashville, TN; Virginia Beach, VA; Raleigh, NC; and Oklahoma City, OK.

‘The fact that the very top and very bottom cities in our ranking are all in the South tells us that an area’s dating scene has very little to do with the region it’s in, but rather has much more to do with the specific circumstances of the city,’ Goldstein said.

Overall, cities that ranked well ‘showed significant single and LGBTQ+ populations, relatively low drink costs, and a large number of bars for the population size’, while the lower ranking cities typically scored zero or slightly higher in at least one category. See also
