New Oklahoma City medical practice targets LGBT patients

Oklahoma City — Russell Rooms’ new primary care practice originally was supposed to see patients only three days a week, but demand already is starting to outstrip appointments available.

Rooms, a nurse practitioner, opened Diversity Family Health in late March in the Diversity Center of Oklahoma, an LGBT resource center, 2242 NW 39. Rooms said he had expected a bit of a slow start, but he has had to expand his hours to accommodate everyone who has sought care, and likely will add more appointments in the future.

“Our goal is to create access to care for this community,” he said.

The practice offers checkups and preventive care like vaccines and some cancer screenings. Rooms also has training in prescribing hormones for transgender people who are transitioning.

Rooms plans to accept private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, and to offer services on a sliding scale for people who don’t have insurance. The clinic was supposed to open earlier this year, but renovations and adding security for patient information took longer than expected, he said.

A Gallup poll estimated about 3.5 percent of Oklahoma City adults identified as LGBT as of 2014, which was on the lower end for major metropolitan areas, but similar to the […]
