Miami bridge collapse: Engineer reported cracks in voicemail

Police say the operation has shifted from rescue to recovery. An engineer working on the Miami university bridge warned of cracks in the structure, two days before it collapsed killing at least six people.

Denney Pate, lead bridge engineer for contractor FIGG, left a voicemail with the Florida transport department on Tuesday.

He warned of "cracking" but also said there was no concern "from a safety perspective".

Department employees did not hear the message until after the bridge fell.

The Florida International University (FIU) concrete bridge collapsed on to a motorway , crushing at least eight vehicles driving beneath.

The number of victims is thought likely to rise as workers clear the rubble from the 862-tonne structure, which was erected days before as a walkway for university students. Bill Aims to Serve LGBT Community and LGBT Opponents

Bill Aims to Serve LGBT Community and LGBT Opponents

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– As it is currently written, Senator Bob Dixon’s Senate Bill 1022 would prevent the state from imposing penalties on those acting in accordance with “sincere religious belief that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman”.

We asked the Senator if this bill would protect, for example, bakers who don’t want to bake cakes for gay couples.

"Well what we’re trying to do with Senate Bill 1022 is bridge a divide,” he said.

Senator Dixon maintains this is simply the first draft of what he hopes this bill can soon be. He says eventually he’d like to see it become a true compromise between the LGBT community of Missouri and those who disagree with their lifestyle based on their religious beliefs.

1022 would also aim to serve the LGBT community by prohibiting discrimination based on “sexual orientation or gender identity”. Currently, those factors are not protected by the state’s discrimination policy.

Steph Perkins, Executive Director of PROMO, an LGBT advocacy group based in Jefferson City, says those five words have been sought after for years. Now those words are within reach because PROMO has been asked to participate in negotiating the final draft of this bill […]

LGBT club balks at endorsement of gay-marriage trailblazer Gavin Newsom

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom failed to earn the endorsement of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club in his bid for the California governorship. (Courtesy photo) Gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom’s first campaign ad touts his “courage” for marrying same-sex couples 14 years ago in The City, a move that bucked state law and catapulted the former San Francisco mayor into national headlines. But closer to home, the nation’s historic first LGBT Democratic club has voted “no endorsement” for the June gubernatorial primary, leaving the slick-haired trailblazer out in the cold.

The Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, which announced its endorsements Tuesday, offered little explanation for the decision. “We don’t ask members why they vote one way or the other,” club co-presidents Gina Simi and Eric Lukoff wrote to me in a statement. “While many continue to support Lt. Governor Newsom, the majority supported Supt. Delaine Eastin … she ultimately wasn’t officially endorsed, but we believe it demonstrates that our Club members consider candidates on their own merits.”

Rumors swirled that Newsom failed to submit a questionnaire, which would make the no-endorsement a simple technicality. The co-presidents said that was not the case.

Marielle Franco’s death is believed to have been an assassination

Thousands have taken to the streets all over Brazil to protest the death of activist and politician Marielle Franco, who was shot to death on Wednesday in what appears to have been a cold-blooded assassination.

The 38-year-old, who was a city councillor in Rio de Janeiro, has been immediately martyred as a symbol of the voiceless in a country which has long been suffering from the effects of structural racism and poverty.

The Associated Press reports that two men in a car fired nine shots into the car carrying Franco and her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, on Wednesday evening and that a press officer in the back seat of the vehicle was injured but survived the attack. The officials they spoke to said they believed that Franco was targeted.

Franco was killed hours after holding an empowerment event for “Young Black Women Who Are Changing Power Structures”. In a speech at the event, she spoke out about police brutality and the lack of black councilwomen elected in Rio.

“I’ll be there for 10 years,” she said of her post which she had held since 2016. “Or think that I’ll be there for 10 […]

Travel operators eye pink dollars as rich LGBT tourists are more willing to go off the beaten track

A placard advertising LGBT travel at the ITB travel trade fair in Berlin. Photo: John MacDougall From gay-friendly honeymoon destinations to party escapes, tourism has long catered to LGBT travellers. As acceptance grows, so do calls for the industry to broaden its offers, and avoid clichés.

All too often travel professionals stuck to stereotypical views of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual guests as hedonistic holidaymakers, says Thomas Boemkes of the consulting agency Diversity Tourism at Berlin’s ITB fair, the world’s largest travel trade show.

“Hotel owners still ask me how to be gay friendly, and if, for example, they should be offering condoms,” says Boemkes.

“I tell them all they have to do is be tolerant and welcoming, as you would be with any other client, without being intrusive,” he says, adding that “it is appreciated” when reception staff ask two male guests whether they would like twin rooms or a shared bed.

The World Tourism Organisation estimated in a 2016 report that LGBT travellers account for five to 10 per cent of global tourists.

It describes a group “that travels with greater frequency and shows higher-than-average patterns of spending”, making them and their so-called “pink dollars” welcome visitors in many countries. John Tanzella, […]
