(Photo by BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP/Getty Images) A Republican congressman will not be apologising after tapes revealed he claimed that gay equality would lead to fraudulent “AIDS marriages”.
Tapes emerged this week of Republican congressman from New Mexico, Rep. Steve Pearce, speaking to voters in 2008.
The recording, flagged by Huffington Post , features the congressman rallying against same-sex weddings, claiming they will lead to fraudulent marriages to allow “people with AIDS” to get healthcare benefits. Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) He said: “I think that marriage is between a man and a woman. People who are describing that there’s no difference between men and women, they don’t know much about life.
“What’s going on with gay marriage is… the redefining of a social institution, and the redefinition has serious downside results.
“We don’t often talk about it in Washington, but the next step then is polymorphism, where one marries many.
“You would say ‘that’s not possible’, but where this is headed is access to benefits… you can imagine that one person would say, all these people in California don’t have access to AIDS treatment, I’m going to marry everybody with AIDS, and suddenly they’ll be able to access the benefit programme.“There’s […]
(Getty) Cynthia Nixon running for governor has sparked headlines across the Atlantic.
The Sex and the City star shared a video on Twitter announcing that she would be attempting to make the grade as New York governor, which in 24 hours alone has accrued one million hits.
Although LGBT+ groups appear to be divided over supporting Nixon rather than incumbent Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, the world has received the news with a lot of fist-bumping.
But another topic has come to light since the announcement – how does Nixon define her sexuality?
Back in 2010, Nixon said that she was “gay as a political stance” but thinks “we’re all bisexual”.
“I identify as gay as a political stance. If anybody, prior to my meeting and falling in love with Christine, had asked me about what I think about sexuality, I would have said I think we’re all bisexual,” she said in an interview with The Advocate.“But I had that point of view without ever having felt attracted to a woman. I had never met a woman I was attracted to [before Christine]. And maybe if I’d met her when I was 20, I would have fallen in love and only dated women. But maybe […]
A study looking into trends in monogamy has found that a significant amount of millennial gay couples are more inclined to want to be in monogamous relationships.
Conducted by Lanz Lowen and Blake Spears, the pair asked 832 gay male respondents aged 18-39 about their dating habits and what relationships they were seeking.
These researchers, who have been in a non-monogamous relationship for 36 years, and have been a couple for 40, have their own unique spin to bring to the tale.
“We had been in a non-monogamous relationship for 36 years and were curious about the experience of others,” said the researchers in The Couple’s Study .
“There wasn’t any roadmap and we assumed long-term couples might offer valuable perspectives and hard-earned lessons.” (Getty) Out of the survey, 632 identified as monogamous, 152 identified as “monogamish”, and 48 identified as non-monogamous.
And to make the research as fair as possible, the couple tried to level out the number of single participants and the number in a relationship – 42 percent being single, 58 percent being in relationships. The results showed 89 percent of singles that are 25 and under want to find a monogamous relationship,93 percent of those aged 26-30 are looking for a […]
(Stock image) A man seeking to marry his laptop in Utah has had his bid rejected – after the state argued it’s not old enough.
Chris Sevier, a prolific anti-LGBT activist known for filing a string of lawsuits targeting LGBT rights, had filed a bizarre challenge in the state of Utah.
The activist had filed a challenge to Utah’s marriage laws after he was denied the right to marry his Macbook – claiming there was no impediment to him doing so after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage.
However, his case was this week dismissed by the United States District Court for the District of Utah, after the state filed a defence pointing out that his shiny new laptop was under the legal age of consent for marriage in Utah , which is 15.
David Nuffer, a United States District Judge, smacked down Sevier’s challenge – which had taken issue with Supreme Court equal marriage ruling Obergefell v. Hodges, as well as the 2003 ruling that struck down sodomy laws, Lawrence v. Texas. He accepted the recommendation of United States Magistrate Judge Evelyn J. Furse, who had penned a scathing judgment smacking down Sevier.
The magistrate judge had written: “The Sevier […]
For twelve days this month, London’s British film institute – the Bfi – will celebrate the best new and classic queer cinema. Alongside films, a series of club nights with live DJs will transform the South Bank venue into an all-encompassing queer space for all.
Festival programmer Michael Eppy, who also programmes the BFI London Film Festival, explained to PinkNews how it is integral the festival’s scheduling promotes the inclusive, liberal values championed by the filmmakers whose work is on show.
“Even people that can’t afford to see films are included,” he tells us. “We have free access events, talks and discussions that compliment the film programme that can be accessed by anyone who comes along to the building.”
Making the festival as accessible as possible is a sentiment inspired by a lack of togetherness in the queer community.
“So often the queer scene can be segregated, you have bars for certain people. What’s so important about the festival is it’s a space where everyone comes together, and engages with each other,” Michael says. (Love, Scott) Flare is “one of those really rare things that we don’t have enough of in the queer calendar, where everyone celebrates one thing together.”

Costa Rican presidential candidate Fabricio Alvarado (Photo by EZEQUIEL BECERRA/AFP/Getty Images) An anti-gay pastor who based his campaign on opposing same-sex marriage has a strong lead in Costa Rica’s Presidential election.
The Central American country’s Presidential battle has been largely defined by a battle over same-sex marriage, with fringe evangelical Fabricio Alvarado Muñoz receiving a surge in support after running an aggressive anti-gay marriage campaign – besting a string of traditional candidates to make the run-off against centrist candidate Carlos Alvarado Quesada.
Alvarado Muñoz has vowed to withdraw Costa Rica from a pan-American human rights treaty that could require it to provide recognition to same-sex couples, while his opponent says the country should respect the human rights of LGBT people. An Opol poll this week has Fabricio Alvarado Muñoz on 36.5 percent, while his rival Carlos Alvarado Quesada is on 27.7 percent of the vote.
CID Gallup poll found a smaller lead, with Alvarado Muñoz maintaining a 4.5 percent lead.
The key to the election will likely be voters who backed […]
(Getty and HBO) John Oliver’s hilarious pro-LGBT version of a children’s story about Vice President Mike Pence’s rabbit is outselling the original book.
The comedian took aim at Pence on the latest episode of his HBO show Last Week Tonight , criticising the Vice President for his anti-LGBT views and his support of Donald Trump.
As part of a wider segment about the Vice President, Oliver announced the release of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents: A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo”. (Instagram/last week tonight) The book parodied a children’s story released by Pence’s family about their rabbit, Marlon Bundo – but Oliver’s team beat the Pences’ release date by a day.
And the book championed by Oliver, about a gay rabbit with a rainbow bow-tie who falls in love, is now the number-one bestseller on Amazon – three places above the Pences’ book.
Not only is it outselling the original, but the Last Week Tonight book has more than 3,000 five-star ratings, whereas the Pence book has a mere 56 reviews. (Amazon) Illustrated by Karen Pence, the wife of the Vice President, and written by their daughter Charlotte, their book is called Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life […]
Dr Everett Piper The head of a religious university has compared LGBT people to ISIS.
The comments come from Everett Piper, the president of the ultra-conservative evangelical Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
Writing in the Washington Times, a right-wing newspaper owned by the fringe ‘Moonie’ Unification Church, Piper lashed out at the LGBT community by comparing them to ISIS extremists. He wrote: “If we have decided the self-evident truths that condemn genocide and the killing fields of Pol Pot do not likewise exist in matters of human sexuality, shouldn’t we be asking what’s next?
“For example, if there is no moral compass other than ‘conversation’ to give us direction concerning the morality of same-sex intercourse then why not have a ‘conversation’ about consensual pederasty?
“Why not discuss the merits of adultery? Why not have dialogue about how those who identify as incestuous need ‘safe spaces’ where they can be affirmed, and loved for who they are?”
He added: “If you’re still not feeling a bit unstable on this slippery slope, I recommend this simple exercise: Go to any article in any magazine or website that argues for ‘conversations’ about sexual morality and simply replace the acronym of the day with another set of letters.“For example, every […]
(Pexels) A 22-year-old blackmailed a gay man into handing over his life savings by threatening to expose him to his family.
Shayne Robson conned his victim, identified as Mr K, out of £25,000 after the pair met on gay dating site Badoo, according to the Metro.
After the pair exchanged lewd photos, Robson told Mr K that he would publish them online if the 25-year-old didn’t keep paying him, Newcastle Crown Court heard. (Pexels) Over the course of five months, his gay victim – who believed that Robson was also gay – gave him his life savings – worth £12,000 – as well as a £5,000 bank loan and another roughly £8,000 he borrowed.
Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw told the court that Robson, who was in a heterosexual relationship at the time in late 2015, that the blackmail started not long into the pair’s conversations.
He said: “From relatively early in their online relationship the defendant asked for money from the complainant because he was having cash problems, had unpaid bills and made various requests for money. (Garloon) “Mr K complied with it. Also they both exchanged images,” he added.
“Those images being naked, or in the case of the complainant indecent, compromising images […]
Whatever you think of the divisive Drag Race All Stars finale, one of the stand-out moments was the one-shot ‘Kitty Girl’ challenge.
The Drag Race challengers and cast channelled OK GO for the video, performing one long lip sync over RuPaul track Kitty Girl – with added verses by Trixie Mattel, Kennedy Davenport, BeBe Zahara Benet and Shangela.
And the challenge has inspired a group of Drag Race fans to make their own version – which threatens to surpass the original. Utah-based Trevor Myrick uploaded his own take on the challenge, which features his friends Brody Hunter, Eric Boscan, Jeffrey Gerard Van Hulten, Ryan Ireland, Cameron Vakilian in a log cabin.
It’s fair to say it’s a hit so far – with more than half a million views on YouTube. The gang’s loving recreation of the clip is near perfect, with each of them taking a verse – and they even recreate the troublesome leg kicks at the end.
One fan joked: “What we’re really missing, though, is the bonus footage with all the drama when they decided who was cast in which role.”
The clip has earned praise from on high, including condragulations from RuPaul, who shared it on Twitter. Michelle Visage added: […]
